Overview
The conference covers topics including pain management, symptom control, psychological and spiritual support, communication with patients and families, ethical issues, grief and bereavement, end-of-life care planning and provider self-care. The conference includes keynote speaker, didactic presentations, case studies, and interactive sessions where participants can learn practical skills and strategies for providing compassionate and effective palliative care.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Recognize the importance of palliative care medicine in improving quality of life for the patients with serious illness and their families from both the primary and specialty care providers' perspective.
  2. Apply effective communication strategies and techniques that can be used in difficult conversations with patients, families, caregivers and colleagues.
  3. Develop a personal action plan for improving communication skills when talking to someone with serious illness.

Sentara is accredited by the Southern States CME Collaborative to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Physicians: Sentara designates this Live Activity for a maximum of 6.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

ABIM MOC: Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 6.00 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
