Mission Statement

Sentara Continuing Medical Education supports Sentara's mission to improve health every day, by producing and delivering educational activities that will promote and maintain the advancement of physicians’ medical knowledge, improve performance in practice, and improve patient outcomes by advancing and transforming the care of defined populations.

The Continuing Medical Education department will monitor the program by identifying gaps in practice, collecting and examining changes in performance, collecting and analyzing evaluations from learners, and measuring expected results in trends toward performance improvement which provides direction towards future educational efforts. Sentara will make publicly available important quality and safety measures.


Accreditation

The Medical Society of Virginia Intrastate Accreditation Committee (IAC) met November 17, 2022. Acting on review of the Sentara Health Self Study Report, activity planning documents, and information obtained from the interview on September 14, 2022, the IAC granted Sentara Health reaccreditation a four-year term. The accreditation period extends to December 12, 2026. The deep commitment and extensive efforts to achieve this success are recognized by the 100% compliance of Sentara Health with all accreditation criteria required for accreditation.

Sentara Continuing Medical Education Privacy and Confidentiality Statement

Sentara maintains a privacy and confidentiality commitment of personal information utilized in any learning format. Sentara acknowledges the importance of the privacy of personal information and is committed to honoring your privacy.

Information collected for the purposes of continuing medical education (CME) will not be provided to any third party.  Unique identifiers are only collected to verify a user’s identity.  Personal information collected consists of full name, degree, contact address, contact phone number, specialty, and email address. Email addresses are used for the sole purpose of communication regarding Sentara CME, and for purposes of notifying users of CME updates and future programs offered through Sentara. 

 

For any errors in the registration information associated with your CME Profile, you may edit your profile at any time under the Manage Profile tab on the Physician Education webpage at www.sentara.com/physicianeducation. Continuing Medical Education Refund Policy

If an accredited activity sponsored by Sentara has a registration fee, the following refund policy will be in effect. Cancellations must be received by the Continuing Medical Education office no less than five (5) business days prior to the activity for a refund. For more information, please email CME@sentara.com.


What We Offer

Sentara accredits a variety of CME Activities for physicians, advanced practice practitioners and other allied health professionals. You can learn more about our program and our achievements by reviewing our annual report.


Want to create your own CME activity?

Continuing Medical Education will guide you through the activity planning process which includes submitting a completed CME application to the CME Committee for approval before planning has begun. This planning process requires a minimum of 60 days and larger conference planning will need at least 6 months.

Accredited Continuing Education

  • Grand Rounds on various clinical topics at most of our Sentara hospitals.
    Grand Rounds may also be offered via Teams for participants to join from anywhere.
  • Regularly Scheduled Cancer Conferences (Tumor Boards)

  • Topic-Specific Series are offered and include such topics as: HCC Education, Trauma M&M, Kidney Transplant, IMPACT Training

Maintenance of Certification/Continuing Certification-MOC/CC 

Continuing Medical Education can provide MOC/CC credit for Internal Medicine, Pathology, Pediatrics, Surgery, and Thoracic Surgery for various activities. Activities that offer MOC/CC will have the credit designation statement in the activity overview page. 

 

Quality Improvement Initiatives

Performance Improvement CME (PI CME) is a CME activity structured by a three-stage process where providers learn about current performance measures, assess their practice, implement interventions to improve performance, and then reassess their practice using the same performance measures.

American Board of Medical Specialties Portfolio Program offers a single process for healthcare organizations to support physician involvement in quality improvement and Maintenance of Certification across multiple ABMS specialties. Sentara's Portfolio sponsorship designates the Continuing Medical Education department to develop and oversee Quality Improvement activities for Part IV completion.
