Optimizing Opioid Therapy for Chronic Pain Management in the Primary Care Setting 2024 - 2027

Primary care providers are in a role to facilitate achieving the vision and goals of Sentara Ambulatory Services Division and Sentara Health for chronic pain management by providing stability for chronic pain patients who frequently present to the office seeking care for pain management. This CBT is designed to improve provider pain management knowledge utilizing evidence-based guidelines integrating daily workflow risk mitigation strategies and utilizing electronic tools.

1. Review guidelines and regulatory updates regarding opioid therapy for chronic pain management.
2. Use a standardized, systematic approach toward assessment and management of chronic pain.
3. Assess the risks and benefits of long-term opioid therapy for chronic pain and factors associated with prescription opioid overdose and abuse.
4. Identify available electronic tools to optimize patient care and provider documentation.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 3.00 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
